Mac or a PC (Hardware) (inc gank v i-Ron)
|
Nerds of WHO.
I am at the point where I need to invest in a new, top spec laptop that is going to last me at least 3 years.
Windows or Mac OS really makes no odds to me as 90% of the use is for Photoshop and Lightroom.
I need at least 16gb RAM, a decent sized SSD and a Quad Core i7.
With this in mind I've narrowed it down to the Dell XPS 15, or the top of the range MacBook Pro Retina.
Both have a 500gb SSD, USB3.0, the same Ram and a similar processor, same have a 2gb dedicated graphics card.
The Dell is £1,500 and the Mac is £2k. The Mac has the Retina, the Dell now comes with a 4k display, which at that size to be honest won't look much different.
I suppose the question is - will the dell last? In my experience, the Apple hardware has lasted really well, first MacBook Pro has lasted 6 years and although it's a bit slow, it still works very well, same with the 4 year old one I'm typing on now. £500 however is a saving you can't ignore, and if I needed to, I could reconfigure the hard drives whereas the Mac you can't (easily).

Slightly biased as I have been using Macs for a few years now, however comparing them side by side my view would be they have ample power and good screens. Dells design surprised me, its there alongside the Mac now in my opinion.
Performance - Mac with the storage speed will win against the Dell, something to consider if you are doing a lot of retrieving and editing of photos.
Software - mac's IOS comes with good apps that share easily across other devices. Also the security benefits cannot be underestimated. You can always run Windows on a mac if there is something specific you need.
Connectivity - if this is a strong consideration, then I have found a Mac to sometimes be a little bit necessary to swap out attachments.
Re the price difference, do you get to the USA at all, if so you can save the difference if you purchase there...

My other half's sister lives there but shipping back would probably bridge the gap anyway

Buy the Mac. You can install the Microsoft OS on the machine if you have to and therefore run your MS apps in a native environment but you also get the benefit of the Mac OS.
You can also use PC emulators, I hear they are very good.

Sounds like ure used to Mac OS, so unless ure fed up with it, stick with it. That is, if you can handle others' thinking ure probably a homosexual.

The OS doesn't bother me, I'm more concerned the Dell will die in 18 months of use, the Mac withstands this punishment with no issues.

Hmm, not sure. I pick only on looks. MSI seem to be aimed at gamers. The fan switches speed often which can be annoying.
I might google MSI vs DELL for you.

This looks an amazing spec for the price which looks like it would smash the mac. The gaming ones are meant for a lot of hard work.

Let's ignore that comparison. They mention an MSI with 4GB RAM. Mine has 16GB and is from 2012.

*sorry, I was referring to my earlier link...
Yeah, MSI are high-spec. If it works for gaming, it certainly works for Graphics, Video, Audio etc too.
I'd suggest a leisurely watch of a YouTube review.

I've just bought a 27" Dell 4k screen this week for video editing, After Effects, Photoshop etc and it's fucking amazing.
If you go to Photoshop's preferences there's an 'experimental' tab that scales Photoshop's menus to 200% so they're easily readable but the extra screen real estate you get for your actual photograph is fantastic- a massive, massive upgrade.
The downside is that I'm desperately trying to justify buying another one to replace my 24" Dell monitor in my dual monitor set-up.

Is money an issue to you? Is £500 a big deal in the scheme of things?
